Basement Bathroom Remodel in Fairfax Station, Virginia

Hall bathrooms are a common room for homeowners to remodel. A typical size for a hall bathroom is 5 by 8 feet with enough space to fit a single sink, toilet, and shower/bath. Although the room is small, a remodel is a great way to improve the look of your home and impress guests.

For this project, the homeowner’s basement bathroom was dated, had old fixtures, and one too many plumbing issues. Before the renovation, the bathroom had poor lighting and looked very small. One of the main goals for this bathroom remodel was to brighten up the room and make it look bigger. We achieved this by choosing a lighter color tile and adding recessed lights.

In this post, we’ll outline our process for remodeling a bathroom of this size, let you in on how much a similar project would cost, and how long it usually takes.

Process of Remodeling A Bathroom

Phase 1:  Demolition

For this bathroom, we removed a vanity cabinet, vanity faucet, mirror, medicine cabinet, vanity light, toilet, shower system, shower enclosure, tile on the wall and floor.

Phase 2:  Rough-In Work

We installed a new valve, new drainage and new shower system.

We checked all the piping for any leaks and replaced faulty pipes.

For the sink, we installed a new p-trap, new valves for the sink. We proceed to check the pipes for any leaking.

We proceed to update all the electrical work such as gsi outlets, adjusted rough-in for vanity lights, exhaust and wiring for recessed lights.

Phase 3: Prep Work

In this phase, we installed durock around the shower system and tub.

We waterproofed the tub area. If the floor is not concrete, we install backer board on the floor.

This is when the tub gets installed.

We skimmed the wall and prepared it for the first coat if paint.

Phase 4: Tiling

We installed tiles on the bathroom floor and on the shower surround. We installed the baseboard during this phase.

Phase 5: Installing the Essentials

We proceed by installing the following :

Vanity set – vanity cabinet, faucet, mirror, and vanity lights.

Shower system, with new exhaust fan and LED recessed lights.

Applied a second coat of paint and installed a new toilet.

Phase 6: Finishing Touches

Lastly, we installed the shower enclosure and did some finishing touches.

What is the Cost & Duration of a 5 x 8 Bathroom Remodel?

A 5 by 8 foot or similar-sized hall or basement bathroom remodeling project usually takes up to 2 weeks to complete and costs around $18,000.
