DIY Roofing – What You Should Know Before Taking on The Project Yourself

Posted on: June 30, 2020

If you’re thinking of taking on your next roofing project on your own, there are a few things you need to know. That being said, we’re all for DIY projects here at WISA, and in some cases doing the project yourself can be an excellent choice.

Today we’re going to break down what goes into a roofing project, and specific things to look for before you decide to DIY your roof completely.

No matter how skilled you are, there are some things that should be done by a professional company.

Inspecting for Water Damage

Before you can start on any of your roof repairs or a full replacement, you’ll need to inspect it and make sure that there isn’t any water damage. There are several ways to tell if your roof has any leaks or water damage. If you neglect to fix the water damage before re-shingling your roof, you’re going to be left with new shingles but a rotting roof.

Here are some of the key ways to know if your roof has water damage:

  • Leaks and water spots on the ceilings.
  • Sagging ceilings or bulging exterior walls.
  • Missing or damaged shingles.
  • Missing granules.
  • Spongy or soft decking.

If you’ve gone through this list and don’t think that there is any water damage on your old roof, then you’ll be good to get started on your roofing project. If you did find water damage, you’d need to reach out to a professional roofing team like WISA. We can make sure that we get your new roof up to building codes and fix any water damage that might have been caused by a leaky roof.

Replacing a Roof by Yourself

A professional roofing crew can really make a roofing project look easy. It goes fast when there are four or more pros up on your roof working efficiently to get the project completed before rain, snow, or other weather can cause damage to your home. An average size roof will normally take a professional team two to three days, including the time that it takes to remove the old asphalt shingles from the roof. That same project could take you a week or more if you don’t have the experience, tools, or manpower that a professional team.

For that reason, we don’t recommend replacing a roof on your own. We’ve found that there are many other DIY projects and ways that you can save money on your home without putting your roof at risk or spending too much time trying to complete the project. One final thing to note is that if you’re an experienced craftsman that has replaced a roof in the past, then there’s no reason why you can’t tackle a new roof by yourself or with some good friends.

Things You Can DIY

Consider offering to do when it comes to getting a new roof on your house is removing the old or damaged shingles. Removing old shingles takes some muscle and sweat but not a lot of skill and can be a great way to save some money on your new roof. Talk to a roofing contractor in your area and ask them if they’d be willing to offer you a discount for removing all of the old shingles from the home. Often roofing companies are busy during the summer months and are more than willing to cut you a deal if you can help them remove the old roofing material.

If you do decide to remove all of the old shingles, then you’ll need to be careful. Approximately 500,000 people fall from ladders every year, and 97% of those people are at home. Getting up on your roof whether to work on shingling a roof, adding Christmas lights, removing ice dams, or inspecting for damage, it’s always dangerous. Roofing contractors are familiar with this danger, but many homeowners are not. When you decide to help with the job or remove the old shingles, keep in mind that the roof deck will become slippery when the wood is exposed.

Finding a Trusted Roofer

While many homeowners are looking to re-shingle their roof by themselves to save money, others aren’t sure where to find a roofing contractor, they can trust to get the job done right. If that’s you and you’ve been actively trying to find a company to help you, then we’d like to offer you some tips for finding a great roofing contractor. DIY roofing is dangerous and can be risky, instead find a good contractor and see what you can do to help your new roof be completed faster.

Here are some questions to ask to ensure you’re hiring a legit roofing company.

  • Has the company been in business for at least 5 years?
  • Does the company carry general liability insurance?
  • Do they use subcontractors?
  • Is the company local?
  • Will they protect the house during the roofing?
  • Do they offer a workmanship warranty?
  • Do they provide a written estimate?
  • Is the customer first?

Whatever contractor you choose to use for your roofs repair, it’s our hope at WISA that you’d find a contractor that treats you right while roofing. Replacing roofing might seem like a small job, but the roof is something that protects your home from exterior elements.
