A big storm begins to form on the horizon. Dark clouds grow larger as harsh winds push the clouds closer to your home. Rains begin to fall and then, hail.
A storm, no matter the season it comes in, can be devastating. Hearing over the radio or on the news that hail is on the horizon can be disheartening.
One of the worst things to find is hail damage on your roof after a big storm. While you can call and schedule an inspector to come out for free to check for hail damage, it’s also good to know what to look for on your own. Today we’ll be going over how to tell if your roof has hail damage as well as what other signs of storm damage you should be able to spot.
One of the biggest differentiators in hail storms is the size of the hail. In many cases, hail will be too small to damage your roof. This short video includes some important facts about hail and how it forms.
Any hail over the size of 1.25 inches will, in almost all cases, cause damage to roofs and siding. If the storm carries the hail with the help of wind, then even smaller size hail can do some pretty severe damage. Most severe damage comes from golf ball or walnut size hail, while occasionally, some hail does get larger. It’s less likely that you’ll see hail the size of a tennis ball or larger.
Hail damage can take a few different forms. It can be either cosmetic or functional. If the damage is cosmetic, it might not “need” to be replaced or repaired, but it is often covered under insurance. Be sure to look into whether your homeowner’s insurance covers cosmetic damage.
Functional damage refers to damage that will comprise the integrity of your home. Functional damage can lead to leaks, rotting, and, eventually, extensive problems with your roof. Checking for functional damage is of the utmost importance.
Granules are the sand-paper like material that’s on the top of your shingles. Granules break the impact of anything that comes in contact with your roof. While breaking the impact, they can come loose, and over time, if you’re not paying attention, your roof will be left without any granules.
A good place to look for missing granules is in your gutters or near your down spots. While some granule loss is common over time, there shouldn’t be any large build-ups.
Highwinds and large hail can crack, tear, or split shingles. This can lead to your roof being exposed and will leave your roof unprotected from rain, wind, and ice.
If hail hits your roof hard enough, it can shatter the surface of a shingle and cause the fiberglass matt to be exposed. These mats aren’t meant to be exposed to access amounts of water. If you see exposed mats, be sure to get them fixed as soon as possible.
Spotting fractured fiberglass takes a trained eye to detect. If there are fractured fiberglass mats on your roof, there’s a possibility that the shingle will tear from that point.
All asphalt shingles have a self-seal strip that, when heated by the sun, attaches itself to the roof or other shingles. The self-seal strip allows all of the shingles to become attached. When it’s damaged by wind, it leaves the roof vulnerable to leaks, missing shingles, and tears. These shingles need to be replaced ASAP.
A hail damaged roof will only lead to existential problems. All hail damage to your home should be inspected and repaired as quickly and efficiently as possible so that there aren’t any issues with your home’s foundation. Finding the right company to repair your roof can be complicated.
