Are you looking to replace your current asphalt shingles?
Finding the right type of shingles can be a real challenge. Currently, there are a lot of available options on the market—from premium to more economical options.
We know that finding the right shingles is just as important as finding the right roofer, and that’s why we’ve put this short guide together.
Here you’ll find different options for your budget as well as some of the consumer reports and reviews. Let’s dive in!
Asphalt shingles are the most common type of roofing material. The main reason for this abundance most commonly used because of its cost-effectiveness and reliability.
When it comes to asphalt shingles, you know what you’re getting based on what you’re paying.
The construction of the product makes up a lot of what separates high-quality versus economic or lower-quality shingles.
Your average shingle consists of four layers or elements. Starting out, you have the fiberglass mat or what is considered the core of the shingle. The fiberglass mat is then coated in asphalt.
Asphalt, known for its water-resistant characteristics, is where the shingles get their name. While the asphalt is still hot, mineral granules—available in a wide range of colors—are applied to the portion of the shingle that will be exposed to the elements.
Finally, there are sealant strips on each shingle that help to seal out moisture and create a bond between all of the different shingles.
The more asphalt that is on a shingle, the thicker it will be. The thicker that it is, the more expensive it will be and the longer it will last.
There are different levels of quality when it comes to asphalt shingles. Sometimes it can be challenging to know what level of quality you’re getting if your roofer isn’t transparent with you. In most cases, you get what you pay for.
If you’re unsure what level of quality the shingles you’re purchasing are, then don’t be afraid to ask. After all, it’s your house that they’re protecting, and you’re the one paying for them!
Quality often means that the shingles are going to last longer. Now, obviously, there are different climates and the weather is going to affect how long the shingles do last. You should expect your shingles to last anywhere from 15 – 30 years, depending on the quality of the shingles and how well they were installed.
In general, the sunnier and warmer a climate is, the shorter the lifespan of your shingles. That’s why in some more temperate climates, such as Florida, asphalt shingles aren’t always the most popular option.
Asphalt shingles all started as just a three-tab simple design. They were and are cost-effective and quickly became the most popular roofing solution.
Three-Tab Shingles are one of the cheaper options and, under optimal conditions, serve their purpose well. These shingles are lighter weight, and because of that will tear more easily in strong winds. Most three-tab shingles are rated for 60-80 mph winds.
Architectural/Dimensional Shingles were developed just after three-tab shingles. They’re designed to be slightly heavier and thicker and have a more appealing look. While these shingles are more expensive, they do last longer due to the thicker material and better wind resistance. Most of these shingles are rated for 110-130 mph winds.
Premium Shingles are all about imitating other roofing materials. These shingles are thicker and provide a much more specific look, often imitating cedar or slate materials. Premium shingles would be considered a luxury and are desired for looks.
There are several other types of roofing. If you’re interested in learning more about materials other than asphalt, you can find information here.
Shingles serve the purpose of keeping water out of your home, but if you’re planning to sell your home, a new roof will add a considerable amount of value to your home. Most home-owners can expect to recoup up to 70% of their investment if they sell their home within ten years of replacing the roof.
Knowing when to replace your shingles can be somewhat tricky. There are the obvious reasons such as storm damage and things like that. But what about knowing when they’re life is just over?
Generally, you can tell that their life is over based on how they look. Of course, if your house starts to leak, you should have it inspected right away to keep from there being any more damage.
Some of the things to look for if you’re not sure are cupped or curled edges, cracks or brittle shingles, and dull color or loss of granules. Each of these will most likely result in a leak if it hasn’t already caused the roof to leak.
It’s not easy to install shingles, and there is a lot of responsibility involved. You must find a local and high-quality roofer that will warranty your product and quality of the installation.
